The Shallows offers an intense experience

The Shallows opened in theaters a long time ago, I know, but I actually just saw it the other night. Since I need to go into overdrive for the next few weeks and catch up on my posting and what not, I decided to write a review for this movie. Is The Shallows perfect? Absolutely not, but it does make your heart race if you can suspend your beliefs a little.

The Shallows takes place somewhere in Mexico when a girl that goes by the name of…….. you know what? We’ll just call her Blake Lively, since she’s the actress who stars as her. Anyways, Blake is currently running from her life after her mom recently passed away. She dropped out of med school and instead went on a world tour of sorts. She goes to a secret beach that her mom told her about so she can go surfing. Long story short, she gets stranded on a rock that is just 200 yards from the shore with a killer shark circling around her.

It’s a pretty simple premise, but it works wonders in terms of cranking up the intensity. The fact that Blake can see the shore throughout the entire movie but she can’t seem to get at it adds to her desperate situation. Blake Lively did an excellent job and she really carries this movie actually. She’s probably not going to win an oscar for this performance but she proves that she’s got a natural talent for it.

The Shallows is an intense survival movie starring Blake Lively who is trapped on a rock by a killer shark
The Shallows is an intense survival movie starring Blake Lively who finds herself trapped on a rock by a killer shark.

Now of course, this movie isn’t without it’s flaws. One of the big flaws is the shark itself. The CGI didn’t look too great in this movie, first of all. It doesn’t necessarily ruin the whole movie but it was a minor annoyance with me. Oh and the shark’s behavior was definitely unbelievable. I’m sorry but there really aren’t any wild sharks that will hang around a rock for three days, kill three people and be able to do some of the other things that this shark does in this movie. When watching this movie, you pretty much have to completely erase your mind of everything that you know about sharks. Oh and it was unbelievable how stupid Blake’s character was. She told her driver at the beginning that he didn’t need to come check on her, even after he told her he lived close by. She didn’t have a designated ride (Uber doesn’t count) and she was in the water alone, swimming up to dead whales. I just shook my head the whole time during the first half hour of this movie.

I think my favorite part about this movie was the cinematography. The Shallows blew my mind with the camera shots. The angles and the action were obviously thought out very thoroughly and shot very well.

The Verdict………3.0 out of 5

  • Intense
  • Great acting
  • A little unbelievable

Six Bands you should check out right now

Hey guys!

How are all my readers? I know I haven’t updated this blog in awhile and I apologize for that. My attention has  been on other things these past couple of weeks and I let it slip under the rug. Anyways, I decided to compile a list of bands that I’ve been listening to quite a bit for the past couple of months. I hope that you can find at least one or two bands that you like. All of them are actually really talented. I’ve discovered the majority of these artists through spotify and you can have a listen to some of the tracks in the playlist below.

6. Made Violent

made-violent

Made Violent is a band that I had the privilege of discovering only a few weeks ago when I went to a concert. They were touring with a band called The Struts, who my brother was a big fan of. I took my brother to the show, not really expecting to enjoy it (I had heard the Struts before and although they were catchy, they just weren’t for me). The best thing that happened that night was finding this band. Made Violent played an hour long set and they killed it. They just had so much energy and you can tell they love what they do. I wondered if their energy translated into their recordings and guess what! They do! These guys have a beautiful blend of garage rock and punk and it really sticks with you. It sounds fresh and it is exciting. So check these guys out for sure. They have plenty of EPs out already and you can listen a small preview of ‘On My Own’ down below.

5. Wavves

wavves-press-photo-by-alexandra-gavillet-

Wavves is a band that I found in Spotify (most of these bands are) a few months ago when I was on the prowl for some new music. Well I found this band, who had just released a new album titled V. The sound of Wavves can best be described as garage rock with some alternative noise and techno-pop influences sprinkled throughout. The singer is great and the songs are catchy. I actually have yet to check out the rest of their albums, but V is a great album and I recommend you check it out. Listen to a preview of ‘My Head Hurts’ off of the new album right here!

4. Coastbound

Coastbound.jpg

This band goes out to all my readers that like a little punch in their music. Coastbound is a punk rock band that has a talent in creating some great punk anthems. They’re relatively new with one EP released and a cover of The Hills. Sometimes, the vocalist gets a little whinier than usual, but if you can get past those kind of vocals , this band might be worth your time. They’ll have you jumping around and screaming along to the lyrics in no time. You can listen to a preview of ‘Shar’s Car’ below in the playlist.

3. SWMRS

SWMRS

This band actually features one of Billie Joe Armstrong’s sons, Joey Armstrong on the drums (not that that’s super relevant or anything, I jut thought it was a cool tidbit of info). SWMRS was originally known as Emily’s Army and was a pop punk band composed of four members. The band recently underwent some changes however and is now called SWMRS. The band has also changed their sound to a more upbeat garage sound. The band actually recently played a show very close to me and I regret not going to see them. Anyways, SWMRS are an excellent band that is bound to be huge at some point. SO if you start listening to them now, you can be that annoying guy that can tell your friends that you listened to them before they were cool. Check out their song, ‘Figuring it Out’ below.

2. The Mountain Goats

Mountain Goats

I discovered the The Mountain Goats because of John Green (the famous writer) and I’m extremely happy that I did. If you have read any of John Green’s books or seen any of the movies that are based off of his books, you might be familiar with the band. The Mountain Goats are a folk band, composed of three members with a plethora of albums that have already been released. I think The Mountain Goats have some amazing songwriting capabilities and the lyrics are superb. You can listen a preview of their song, ‘This Year’ right down below.

1. Hotel Books

Hotel Books

Hotel Books is a pretty different band and I mean that in a good way. They kind of remind me of Twenty One Pilots but with a full band instead of just two guys. The majority of the vocals are rapping with minimal singing by the back up vocals. Altogether though, this band can slay at writing music. The lyrics are absolutely wonderful and the melodies and beats ony accent the vocals. You can listen to their song, ‘Run Wild, Young Beauty’ right down below.

The Playlist

What do you think?

Obviously the music on this list won’t pertain to everyone out there but these bands are just a few that I’ve found over the past year. What bands have you been listening to? Feel free to let me know in the comments below!

Misadventures Album Review

It’s been FOUR STINKING years since Pierce the Veil released their last album, Collide With The Sky and it’s a given that fans have been dying to hear some new music. Misadventures is the 4th album by the band released May 13 of this year. A little history on my love for Pierce the Veil: the first song I heard by them was King for a Day and I was hooked. I soon bought their album, Collide with The Sky and listened to it on repeat for a few weeks. I also listened to their older albums and I just really fell in love with them. They just seemed pretty different to me, even for a postcore band. So now, after four years in the shadows, how does Pierce the Veil sound in their new album?

Awesome. They just sound awesome in this new album. It was definitely worth the four year wait to get our hands on some new music. Pierce the Veil has honestly taken it up a notch in terms of writing music. I’ve already hit repeat on this album 4 times.

The album opens with the song, ‘Dive In’, which starts off pretty slow but goes from 0 to 100 real quick. You can tell immediately from this song that Pierce the Veil is still Pierce the Veil, with their melancholy tunes and sick breakdowns. The breakdown in ‘Dive In’ is just brilliant and the rest of the breakdowns in this album follow the same formula. They all sound so groovy, like I’m serious, they all just flow really well. You don’t just want to headbang and jump around like a crazy person, you can just nod in appreciation to how it sounds (but I’ll headbang like a crazy person anyways). So yes the breakdowns are impressive and they are among some of the best I’ve heard. Besides the breakdowns, Pierce the Veil keeps the melancholy melodies that they’re so good at. Vic’s vocals match the music really well, as always and his screams are exceptional. I feel as if Pierce the Veil has struck such a great balance between brutality and melody which makes for a great listening experience. If this album has shown anything, it’s that a band can still sound just as new and refreshing when playing with the same formula.

I have a few gripes however (I know, I know). Sometimes I would be listening to the music and there were a few parts in the album (I don’t remember on which songs right now) that seemed a little forced and a little awkward. It kind of disrupted the flow of the album which is only a minor grievance.

All in all, Misadventures is a great album and was honestly worth the four year wait. Pierce the Veil has obviously still got it and they’re tearing it up with some great tunes.

The Verdict…………….4.0 out of 5

  • great breakdowns
  • excellent vocals
  • very original sounding music
  • some awkward/forced parts

Thank you guys for giving this review a read! Be sure and give this a like and a share if you liked it! Also, feel free to check out my other reviews and such on the sidebar to the left. What did you think of Misadventures? Comment below and let me know! Have a terrific week!

The Hateful Eight movie review

Yes… I know I’m late

To be honest, I didn’t plan to write a review for this one. The Hateful Eight premiered in theaters on December 25, 2015 and was just released on DVD and blu-ray on March 29. When I saw this movie on Redbox however, I really wanted to watch it so I rented it. I didn’t really plan on writing a review for it though, because of how long it’s been out. I am watching this movie for the third time however and I regret with every fiber of my being, not going to see this movie in theaters. This movie is without a doubt one of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen. Despite the fact that you’ve probably already heard so much about this movie and might have even seen the movie yourself, I thought I might as well add my own two cents to the pot.

The Review

For those of you who might not have seen The Hateful Eight yet (you’re crazy if you haven’t) the movie revolves around a cast of characters, locked inside a cabin from a blizzard. Inside this cabin you have quite a few different types of characters, including bounty hunters, a hangman, a Mexican innkeeper, a past Confederate general and a prisoner being taken to hang for a reward. With so many mysterious characters, John Ruth (the bounty hunter) fears that someone might be in cahoots with Daisy Domergue (the prisoner) to free her from her fate to hang. Just like that we have a movie (but more importantly a Quentin Tarantino movie). This plot is heavy with classic Tarantino style dialogue, heavy tension, and a bloody finale. When I think about the plot, I don’t actually have any complaints about this movie. I’ve heard some people complain about how fast things came to a close, but that didn’t bother me. The first half was filled with interesting dialogue and amazing monologues (Seriously, some of my favorite I’ve ever heard) while the second half escalated so quickly, it was over before you knew it. I liked the structure of the plot and the story was very intriguing and exciting. It’s kind of hard to classify the movie into one genre, because well…… it’s a Tarantino movie. I can assure you though that this movie is kind of like a mystery. After bad stuff happens, it becomes a game of whodunit. This movie is three hours long but it zooms by in the blink of an eye. The tension was always building and you were constantly drawn to the plot, hanging on every last word said by the characters.

All of the actors did amazing jobs. It’s hard for me to pick a standout role, simply because of how amazing everyone was in this movie. I mean……. it blows my mind. Each of the actors filled their roles perfectly so props to everyone there. Every single one of the characters in the movie had different ideologies and some interesting backstories, and the actors just really brought them to life. I’ve noticed that trend in Quentin’s movies. There’s always a guarantee for great acting. There were confrontations between the characters that had nothing to do with the prisoner, Daisy Domergue and they were just as interesting as the main plot.

Also I just wanted to give a quick nod to the music in this movie. If you’ve already seen the reviews for this movie, you’ve probably heard about the soundtrack. I’m going to go ahead and reiterate the amazingness of the soundtrack however. It’s amazing. It fits the mood of this movie so perfectly well and it sounds great. The composer did a great job with the music so congratulations to him on that.

Oh and the camerawork was amazing. I feel like I’m not getting the grand scope of it all by watching it on my 32″ TV but even I can tell that this movie must really have looked magnificent in the 70 mm projection screenings. Everything about the camerawork was amazing. There were beautiful scenic shots and fast action shots during action scenes. The camera work just felt really snappy and solid.

The Verdict………5.0 out of 5.0

  • Great dialogue
  • Great tension building story
  • Amazing actors
  • Gory action

Hands down, this is my new favorite Quentin Tarantino film and maybe one of my new all time favorites. I feel as if I have much more to say on the movie, but I’m pretty sure that I’ll just be repeating myself. If you haven’t seen this movie, then I recommend it to you if you’re into Tarantino movies. Thank you for giving this review a read! Please like and share! You can also check out my other reviews in the sidebar to the left. What did you think about the movie? Comment and let me know! Thank you guys!

Suicide Squad Trailer #3 Recap

Happy Monday guys!

I hope all of you had a great weekend! I had an awesome time, getting to go camping this week with my best friends Michael and Tyler. It’s a Sunday night currently but I want to wish you guys good morning, or good afternoon, or good whenever you’re reading this. So the third trailer for Suicide Squad just dropped and my friend texted me about it so I thought I’d check it out. I have to say that this trailer does not take away any of my excitement for the movie, but I’m starting to feel like there is no need for another. Check out the trailer below….

Trailer #3 for Suicide Squad opens with a man asking a room full of people, what if Superman had decided to kidnap the president and who would stop him if he did? I really liked that. It showed that even after the supposed “death” of Superman, people are still debating over whether or not they should have been afraid of Superman. It shows continuity from Batman V Superman and it shows that us normal humans aren’t taking any risks. We are led to believe that this question transitions to the proposal for the construction of the Suicide Squad. A lethal team composed of bad guys that are ready to do some damage. The rest of the trailer is filled with some awesome action scenes and comedic moments.

Admittedly the trailer is cool. It’s got cool music and it even shows us some cool new scenes (especially of the Joker but I’ll get to that later), but this trailer doesn’t seem to serve a purpose, besides building hype. We don’t learn anything new, there’s no other plot points revealed. I don’t mind getting hyped up for this movie, but I also like being surprised. I wouldn’t mind too much if there wasn’t another trailer for this movie till the release in August (why so far away?).

Alright, so about the Joker. Did anybody else catch the scene where part of his face looked

Suicide Squad (2)
A screenshot showing the Joker’s face

burned? Seriously, just watch again and look closely. That scene was easily the most interesting scene in the whole trailer. I mean there were other various scenes in the trailer that made me curious but I really wanna know what happened to the Joker’s face. Another thing about this trailer before I close up, I’m getting the sense that the Joker is not the main villain here. I don’t know what it is, but I just really don’t think that the Joker is the guy that the Suicide Squad is after.

Alright so those are my thoughts on the matter at hand. What are yours? Leave a comment below and let me know! Have a great day guys and have a great week! Oh and let me give a quick shout out to all my blogging followers! I’m up to 21 now and even though that doesn’t sound like a lot to some, it’s a lot to me. It means so much guys! Thank you all for the reads and the subscriptions! It’s very very very inspiring.

Peace out!

Daredevil Season 2 Review

It’s good to be back…

Hey guys! How has everyone been doing? I know I haven’t been very active and I apologize for that, but I gotta a lot of reviews coming up in the coming week. And I thought to myself, “what better way to start a reviewing bonanza than with a review of Daredevil’s second season?” So here I am about to drop my bomb review for this thing.

The Story

When The first season for Daredevil was released I had meant to get a review up for it but I never did. Overall, I really really liked the show. I liked how dark it was compared to the Marvel movies and it made me very excited for the many years to come. But man, I was not prepared for this season. Some people I’ve talked to about it, said that they still think the first season was better than this new on, but I disagree wholeheartedly. Firsty, I think the plot was a whole lot better than the first season. I feel like the stakes were raised immensely. The addition of new characters created interesting story arcs and you really get the feeling that Matt Murdock is fighting a war that is bigger than just him. I’ll get more to the characters in a minute. This season sees Matt Murdock trying to balance his vigilante life while maintaining a normal life for the average eye. He struggles in this department, however, and everything seems to be falling apart. We’ve seen this before in other superhero stories, but with such an excellent cast, it feels fresh and exciting. Not to say that I was excited for Matt Murdock’s world to fall apart. I have one real complaint about the plot and that is the different story arcs between the Punisher and Elektra and how the season interchanges between those storylines. The season opens with the main storyline being the fight between Daredevil and the Punisher which was awesome. I loved the different ideologies that clash between the two and the fighting and everything. Then about halfway through the season, something happens and the storyline shifts toward Elektra and her story arc. Some people think that from there, the story line shifts between Elektra and the Punisher, but in my opinion, I think the Punisher’s story arc is underplayed once Elektra is on the scene. I don’t know why but at the end of the season, I wasn’t exactly satisfied with how the Punisher’s arc played out. I felt that it was the more interesting story arc and it was underplayed. But that really is the only complaint I had at the end of this season.

The characters

I’ll start this section by giving a nod to every cast member on this show. Everyone did a great job with their roles and I look forward to seeing them in the future. In the first season, I think I watched the show mostly for the characters. They were interesting and they felt like real people, thanks to the actors. And that carries over into this season with the continuation of great acting from old and new faces. I’m also going to give mega props to Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle AKA The Punisher. That dude was really really really good in this role. His acting was spot on and I think that’s why I was so much more invested in his story arc. Now I’m not saying that Elektra was a bad actress or that her story wasn’t interesting. I just think that Jon Bernthal stole the show this season. I’m really excited to get to see him the future actually. I think I liked his character more and his story arc more because they were very realistic. Daredevil was a show tha seemed gritty and realistic to me. I very much enjoyed that they were fighting realistic villains. It was a breath of fresh air from the regular Marvel movies that see heroes fighting against aliens and powerful beings. But in this season they have introduced all this hocus pocus magic stuff and I’m just not super on board with that. Either way this this season was excellent and I can’t wait to see the next one.

The Verdict………..4.5 out of 5

  • great characters
  • solid storyline
  • hocus pocus stuff
  • awesome fight scenes

So what did you guys think of the latest Daredevil Season? Comment below and let me know! Have a great weekend guys.

The Weekend Pick- 2/26/16

Happy Friday!

Hey guys! It’s been awhile since I’ve done a weekend pick hasn’t it? Anyways the weekend is upon us, and since I won’t be posting over the weekend, I thought I could give you guys a list of things to do over the weekend. For old time’s sake, anyways.

What’s at the movies this weekend? Deadpool and Gods of Egypt

gods-of-egypt-poster-banner

I know that Deadpool has been out for a couple of weeks now, but I decided to add it to the list because that’s what I’ll be seeing tonight with my friends. We were waiting for Brayden to 17 before we went and saw it. I heard that this movie lives up to the hype, so I’m pumped to finally see it. I’ll release my own review for that movie next Monday, so keep an eye out for it! This weekend is going to be the opening weekend for Gods of Egypt which is a movie that I am very interested in. The visual effects look great and the plot line looks intriguing. I’m hoping to also see that movie at some point this weekend.

What’s on Netflix? Dope

I watched this movie the other day and my mind was blown. My mind was blown, because this movie deserves to be talked about, but since it was released, I’ve barely heard anything about it. It blows my mind, because out of all the movies that came out in 2015, I gotta say this one was one of the best ones! I didn’t even get to watch it until 2016 when it came to Netflix! Okay listen, if you like stories about nerdy kids, if you like the nineties, if you like great acting, then check this movie out. You won’t regret it, I’m serious.

What will I be jamming to this weekend? A whole lot of Green Day

Yeah I don’t know why, but I’ve been in the mood for Green Day recently. SO this weekend, I’ll probably be listening to a lot of their older stuff. If you’ve never really listened to Green Day but you want to, I’d suggest look for their first album. 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. You probably won’t find the cd anywhere, but look it up on iTunes or Spotify or whatever. The album is sick and it’s easily one of my favorite Green Day albums of all time. I just love how catchy the songs are and how great it sounds. The album is pure punk I tell you. Pure punk……

What’s a good book that I could read? The Girl on the Train

I wrote a review on this book which you can find here. If you click on that link you will read some more specific reasons about why you should give this thriller a read. Basically, you should read this book, because it is a good book. It has a great cast of characters, and a suspenseful plot. The ending falls a little flat, but it doesn’t ruin the book. You should definitely give it a read.

Have a great weekend you guys!

Well, it’s been a long week (at least for me, it has been) but we’re finally here! Happy Friday again guys. Have a safe weekend and I’ll see you again on Monday, with my review for Deadpool. Go ahead and give this guy a share and a like if you feel like it, and visit my other pages if you want to see more from me! I apologize is this post doesn’t too that sharp. I’m having trouble formatting and editing images so that the blog can flow better. Hopefully I’ll find a way to fix this in the future!
