Misadventures Album Review

It’s been FOUR STINKING years since Pierce the Veil released their last album, Collide With The Sky and it’s a given that fans have been dying to hear some new music. Misadventures is the 4th album by the band released May 13 of this year. A little history on my love for Pierce the Veil: the first song I heard by them was King for a Day and I was hooked. I soon bought their album, Collide with The Sky and listened to it on repeat for a few weeks. I also listened to their older albums and I just really fell in love with them. They just seemed pretty different to me, even for a postcore band. So now, after four years in the shadows, how does Pierce the Veil sound in their new album?

Awesome. They just sound awesome in this new album. It was definitely worth the four year wait to get our hands on some new music. Pierce the Veil has honestly taken it up a notch in terms of writing music. I’ve already hit repeat on this album 4 times.

The album opens with the song, ‘Dive In’, which starts off pretty slow but goes from 0 to 100 real quick. You can tell immediately from this song that Pierce the Veil is still Pierce the Veil, with their melancholy tunes and sick breakdowns. The breakdown in ‘Dive In’ is just brilliant and the rest of the breakdowns in this album follow the same formula. They all sound so groovy, like I’m serious, they all just flow really well. You don’t just want to headbang and jump around like a crazy person, you can just nod in appreciation to how it sounds (but I’ll headbang like a crazy person anyways). So yes the breakdowns are impressive and they are among some of the best I’ve heard. Besides the breakdowns, Pierce the Veil keeps the melancholy melodies that they’re so good at. Vic’s vocals match the music really well, as always and his screams are exceptional. I feel as if Pierce the Veil has struck such a great balance between brutality and melody which makes for a great listening experience. If this album has shown anything, it’s that a band can still sound just as new and refreshing when playing with the same formula.

I have a few gripes however (I know, I know). Sometimes I would be listening to the music and there were a few parts in the album (I don’t remember on which songs right now) that seemed a little forced and a little awkward. It kind of disrupted the flow of the album which is only a minor grievance.

All in all, Misadventures is a great album and was honestly worth the four year wait. Pierce the Veil has obviously still got it and they’re tearing it up with some great tunes.

The Verdict…………….4.0 out of 5

  • great breakdowns
  • excellent vocals
  • very original sounding music
  • some awkward/forced parts

The Hateful Eight movie review

Yes… I know I’m late

To be honest, I didn’t plan to write a review for this one. The Hateful Eight premiered in theaters on December 25, 2015 and was just released on DVD and blu-ray on March 29. When I saw this movie on Redbox however, I really wanted to watch it so I rented it. I didn’t really plan on writing a review for it though, because of how long it’s been out. I am watching this movie for the third time however and I regret with every fiber of my being, not going to see this movie in theaters. This movie is without a doubt one of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen. Despite the fact that you’ve probably already heard so much about this movie and might have even seen the movie yourself, I thought I might as well add my own two cents to the pot.

The Review

For those of you who might not have seen The Hateful Eight yet (you’re crazy if you haven’t) the movie revolves around a cast of characters, locked inside a cabin from a blizzard. Inside this cabin you have quite a few different types of characters, including bounty hunters, a hangman, a Mexican innkeeper, a past Confederate general and a prisoner being taken to hang for a reward. With so many mysterious characters, John Ruth (the bounty hunter) fears that someone might be in cahoots with Daisy Domergue (the prisoner) to free her from her fate to hang. Just like that we have a movie (but more importantly a Quentin Tarantino movie). This plot is heavy with classic Tarantino style dialogue, heavy tension, and a bloody finale. When I think about the plot, I don’t actually have any complaints about this movie. I’ve heard some people complain about how fast things came to a close, but that didn’t bother me. The first half was filled with interesting dialogue and amazing monologues (Seriously, some of my favorite I’ve ever heard) while the second half escalated so quickly, it was over before you knew it. I liked the structure of the plot and the story was very intriguing and exciting. It’s kind of hard to classify the movie into one genre, because well…… it’s a Tarantino movie. I can assure you though that this movie is kind of like a mystery. After bad stuff happens, it becomes a game of whodunit. This movie is three hours long but it zooms by in the blink of an eye. The tension was always building and you were constantly drawn to the plot, hanging on every last word said by the characters.

All of the actors did amazing jobs. It’s hard for me to pick a standout role, simply because of how amazing everyone was in this movie. I mean……. it blows my mind. Each of the actors filled their roles perfectly so props to everyone there. Every single one of the characters in the movie had different ideologies and some interesting backstories, and the actors just really brought them to life. I’ve noticed that trend in Quentin’s movies. There’s always a guarantee for great acting. There were confrontations between the characters that had nothing to do with the prisoner, Daisy Domergue and they were just as interesting as the main plot.

Also I just wanted to give a quick nod to the music in this movie. If you’ve already seen the reviews for this movie, you’ve probably heard about the soundtrack. I’m going to go ahead and reiterate the amazingness of the soundtrack however. It’s amazing. It fits the mood of this movie so perfectly well and it sounds great. The composer did a great job with the music so congratulations to him on that.

Oh and the camerawork was amazing. I feel like I’m not getting the grand scope of it all by watching it on my 32″ TV but even I can tell that this movie must really have looked magnificent in the 70 mm projection screenings. Everything about the camerawork was amazing. There were beautiful scenic shots and fast action shots during action scenes. The camera work just felt really snappy and solid.

The Verdict………5.0 out of 5.0

  • Great dialogue
  • Great tension building story
  • Amazing actors
  • Gory action

Hands down, this is my new favorite Quentin Tarantino film and maybe one of my new all time favorites. I feel as if I have much more to say on the movie, but I’m pretty sure that I’ll just be repeating myself. If you haven’t seen this movie, then I recommend it to you if you’re into Tarantino movies. Thank you for giving this review a read! Please like and share! You can also check out my other reviews in the sidebar to the left. What did you think about the movie? Comment and let me know! Thank you guys!

Let’s get some coffee!

“Good morning!”

is what I would say if we decided to go get some coffee. After I say good morning however, I’ll probably get really quiet because, I’m nervous around people I don’t know very well. You’ll probably start the conversation with some small talk, asking me how my day was and how college is going for me. After you talk for awhile I might finally get up the courage to speak up as well.

I would answer your questions first. College is going well for me. I feel as if I’m doing a good job at it and I hope to remain successful in the coming years. My life is pretty great too. I’ve been trying to stop taking things for granted and appreciate the little things. My days are usually super busy but I love doing what I do, whether that be working on journalism, giving guitar lessons, and playing in my band. It just means that I’m being as fulfilling as possible which is awesome. I don’t mind stopping and taking a break every once in awhile, like this morning to write this post. Then I’d launch into a little more specific things in my life.

I would probably tell you all of the more exciting things first. Like how my band has finally finished our first EP and are hoping to release it to the world soon. I’m nervous about doing so, but I’m actually really proud of what our band has accomplished. It’s definitely not the best product out there, but we did the best we could and I’m proud of that. I’m also nervous about releasing it because once we release it, it will become real and everyone will be able to listen to it. I’ve been apart of the band for almost five years so I’ve grown really close to those guys. I’m always really happy and excited for band practice to roll around. In a way, the garage that we practice in, has become a second home, a refuge. It is a place where my creativity flows through my fingers and out my throat. Once we release this EP, it’s almost as if we’re inviting other people into this sacred home where we write these songs. You’ll probably think I’m being dramatic but these are real thoughts going through my head. I’m so scared of failing with my music that I’m tempted to never even try. I have been fighting this urge however and will release it because this is one thing that I won’t regret later down the road. Who knows though right? Maybe you’re having coffee with a rockstar. [enter wink here]

I would also tell you about getting to go to Six Flags tomorrow with the youth group from my church. I haven’t been to Six Flags in forever, so I’m excited to go! Last time I went, I didn’t really ride all the rides (for instance, I’m terrified of the Rattler) but I’m hoping to conquer that fear tomorrow! It might not work out and I might be chicken, but it should be fun.

I would also tell you about how great the whole journalism thing is going. I have been taking journalism classes this semester and they are awesome! My teachers are amazing and the students are all really nice. I’ve been playing a big part in designing the college newspaper which has been really awesome. I really enjoy journalism and I’m glad that I found something I love doing. I’m still not sure about what I want to do for a career but I feel as if I am one step closer to finding it and that’s awesome. I really hope that I end up doing something that I love though.

Alright, I’d have to get up and get some more coffee at this point because I drink it way too fast and I can never get enough!

When I get back I start to tell you about this girl I know. It’s not just any girl. This girl is amazing. She’s hilarious, beautiful, smart, caring. It’s pretty unbelievable how amazing she is. I really like her which is a problem. It’s a problem because she’s unavailable and that kind of hurts. Don’t worry I’m not making any moves because that would be disrespectful. No, I’m keeping my respectful distance and hoping her the best in her future. It just kind of hurts because she’s just so brilliant. I know that there are other fish in the sea and that I should move on because it’s hopeless. That’s easier said than done though my friend.

That’s really all I have to talk about over coffee this weekend. This was my first post in this hashtag! I actually really enjoyed doing that. I hope you guys enjoyed it yourself. Now for the first time in forever, I’m going to sit down and get some reading done. Oh how I’ve missed my book!

Blink 182 premieres new song ‘Bored to Death’

Happy Thursday ladies and gentleman!

So for those of you who might not have heard, Blink 182 released a new single yesterday evening. The song, titled Bored to Death was personally a huge hit with me (I listened to it like 20 times last night). Bored to Death is the first song that Blink has released since 2012 when they released the EP, Dogs eating Dogs (I believe I’m correct with that) and the first song that Blink has ever released without Tom Delonge. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of Blink, I honestly recommend that you give it a listen down below.

Bored to Death

Along with the release of the new single, Blink has finally announced their upcoming album, California, which will be hitting the record stores on July 1st. This will also be their first album release without Tom.

What do I think about the track? Well as I already said above, I absolutely love it. I’m not the biggest fan of Blink 182, I haven’t listened to every song that they’ve ever released, but this song is ridiculously good. Sorry Tom, you missed out. Not only does this single have the significant sound to it that is Blink 182, but the lyrics also feel like classic Blink. I saw a comment on this video that said something along the lines of, “This is like a wine well aged.” I wholly agree with that. All in all I thought this was a great single for the upcoming album and I am pretty excited to get to hear the rest of this one.

What did you guys think of the single? Did you like it or hate it? Let me know! Have a great day.

A Note to the Haters on Star War Rogue One

No one cares…

Or at least most people don’t. There I said it. Listen nobody cares whether or not you liked the trailer to the movie. And while I suspect that most comments on Youtube are just pure trolling and hate trash, it’s annoying. It’s annoying because it’s hard to find anything positive on the internet nowadays but it’s even worse when h the comments are made by wannabe critics who judge a movie before it’s even out in the theaters. They released one trailer, one trailer, and already I can’t believe some of the comments. I think I’m just going to avoid the comment sections from now on, but right now…… I’m going to rant.

On the Female protagonist….

You guys can’t just say that their forcing another female protagonist. Get over it and realize that it’s not YOU who is making the movie. If they want a female protagonist then they can have one. A female or male protagonist is not going to break the movie. We have to wait until the movie comes out to see if that character is likable, if that character is played very well by the actress. Even then, a movie can be very enjoyable even if the lead character isn’t great. You can’t write a movie off just because it has another female lead. I also saw some person post on Tumblr about how she rolled her eyes when women were crying over the trailer because of the female lead. Then this person, in the same post, talked about how she won’t be impressed with the new Star Wars movies until she sees a black woman take the lead. Seriously? Now, before you guys go nuts, I’m not saying that it’s a crazy idea to have a black woman in a lead part for Star Wars. I wouldn’t even mind seeing it in the future. But to be unimpressed with a movie just because it doesn’t feature a black lead? Oh and she calls herself a huge Star Wars fan……. The problem here is, that people are writing movies off just because it doesn’t feature something that they want in the movie. I’m sure these people consider themselves to be expert movie critics too. Listen guys… It’s not YOUR movie. Not every little thing in this movie is going to be what you wanted, but that’s where the movie critic comes in.

On the Star Wars universe as a whole…..

I also was graced with a lot of comments about how Disney was going to ruin the Star Wars universe. How Disney was going to put out way too many movies, and they wanted quality over quantity, which is once again premature judging. People who make these types of comments are assuming and insinuating that most of these movies are going to be terrible, but I want to know where they’re getting their information from. Were they in the same room as the script was written? Have they had a chance to go on set? For some reason, I highly doubt it. After the prequels, any Star Wars fan should have been dying for more movies, but they never came. Until Star Wars The Force Awakens of course. Despite the fact that it had similar plot elements to past Star Wars movies, it was a pretty good movie. Admit it….. you enjoyed it. Now Disney is going to be putting out more?! Are you kidding me?! This should be every Star Wars fan’s dream! Rogue One is going to be the first movie spin-off and you know what? Bring it on because I’m excited for it. Yes, I understand that some people might be worried or cautious about more Star Wars movies, but I actually don’t see why people are feeling that way. Disney doesn’t have many bad movies on it’s rap sheet. Look at Marvel! Disney didn’t ruin that, did they? Was every movie perfect? No, but they were and still are pretty enjoyable. Is every movie in the Star Wars universe going to be perfect? Heck no, but I’m willing to bet that they’re going to be pretty terrific in the long run. Besides, what’s the worst that could happen? You go see one of the movies at the theaters and you didn’t like it. You’re down a few bucks but you’ll live.

End rant

I know that critiquing movies always includes opinions. Most reviewers on the internet today are very opinionated actually. But I’m just sick and tired of people writing a movie off on one teaser trailer and for some of the dumbest reasons ever. You can’t tell a movie by one trailer, let alone a teaser. Please stop judging a movie by it’s teaser and just wait before you voice your full opinion. Thank you guys for bearing with me through this and thank you for reading. If you haven’t seen the teaser for Rogue One, you can check it out below!

Suicide Squad Trailer #3 Recap

Happy Monday guys!

I hope all of you had a great weekend! I had an awesome time, getting to go camping this week with my best friends Michael and Tyler. It’s a Sunday night currently but I want to wish you guys good morning, or good afternoon, or good whenever you’re reading this. So the third trailer for Suicide Squad just dropped and my friend texted me about it so I thought I’d check it out. I have to say that this trailer does not take away any of my excitement for the movie, but I’m starting to feel like there is no need for another. Check out the trailer below….

Trailer #3 for Suicide Squad opens with a man asking a room full of people, what if Superman had decided to kidnap the president and who would stop him if he did? I really liked that. It showed that even after the supposed “death” of Superman, people are still debating over whether or not they should have been afraid of Superman. It shows continuity from Batman V Superman and it shows that us normal humans aren’t taking any risks. We are led to believe that this question transitions to the proposal for the construction of the Suicide Squad. A lethal team composed of bad guys that are ready to do some damage. The rest of the trailer is filled with some awesome action scenes and comedic moments.

Admittedly the trailer is cool. It’s got cool music and it even shows us some cool new scenes (especially of the Joker but I’ll get to that later), but this trailer doesn’t seem to serve a purpose, besides building hype. We don’t learn anything new, there’s no other plot points revealed. I don’t mind getting hyped up for this movie, but I also like being surprised. I wouldn’t mind too much if there wasn’t another trailer for this movie till the release in August (why so far away?).

Alright, so about the Joker. Did anybody else catch the scene where part of his face looked

Suicide Squad (2)
A screenshot showing the Joker’s face

burned? Seriously, just watch again and look closely. That scene was easily the most interesting scene in the whole trailer. I mean there were other various scenes in the trailer that made me curious but I really wanna know what happened to the Joker’s face. Another thing about this trailer before I close up, I’m getting the sense that the Joker is not the main villain here. I don’t know what it is, but I just really don’t think that the Joker is the guy that the Suicide Squad is after.

Alright so those are my thoughts on the matter at hand. What are yours? Leave a comment below and let me know! Have a great day guys and have a great week! Oh and let me give a quick shout out to all my blogging followers! I’m up to 21 now and even though that doesn’t sound like a lot to some, it’s a lot to me. It means so much guys! Thank you all for the reads and the subscriptions! It’s very very very inspiring.

Peace out!

To Open The Week (my opinion on YA novels, what I’m working on now, and the Windfest Show)

Well it’s monday for starters…….

and while I may be writing this on a Sunday night instead of studying for my history exam on Tuesday (because I’m just a rebel) I can tell you that I am probably not happy this fine Monday morning. The reason is simply because I am currently burning my way through George RR Martin’s Storm of Swords as quick as I can, which means that I will be up late tonight burning through the pages, completely absorbed into Martin’s fantastic world. The choice that I make will leave me exhausted and cranky in the morning.  I’m hoping to finish this book pretty soon so that I can write a review on it for you guys. I’m trying to find some time to write some more reviews or really just get more content on my page in general. I have been pretty bad about my New Year’s resolution so far. I have plenty of ideas like for example, I still have two MCR albums that I have to review for you guys. On top of that, I have The Black (Asking Alexandria’s new album) to review and I think I’m going to finally write a review for House of Cards season 1 which is a brilliant show.

Today, for some reason I was thinking a lot about young adult novels. I think I started thinking about them because I was watching some Vlog brother videos which is a Youtube channel that is run by John Green and his brother Hank. John Green mentioned that he was working on a new book which made me very excited. John has written some of the best novels I have ever read, period. Then I thought about some of the other big YA novels, mainly The Hunger Games and The Divergent Series which have both become phenomenons in the young adult genre. Both have movie series with big name actors in them and both are in the same sub-genre: dystopian. Now I think that this is going to be about dystopian for the most part. I’m not sure if I’m ever going to read a dystopian YA novel again. I remember when I was young and I read The Hunger Games when it was first released. I loved it. The whole concept of it was….. dark. I felt like I shouldn’t have been reading a book this violent, this dark, with such a terrible but wonderfully original concept. I read all of the novels as they came out. The original is still my favorite to this day. The second just made me think meh and the third novel did not impress me. Then I heard about a new series called Divergent. I borrowed all three books from a friend of mine and read them in a week. I know what you’re thinking, well if he tore through them then he must have liked them and that is true. The novels were well written and were addicting to read. There was a lot of action and I never got bored as I ripped through the pages. Once I had finished that series though, I sat back and thought about how Divergent felt vaguely familiar to another series I read. Strong female lead character, sappy romance, overthrow of the government, lots of death and lots of feels. You know where I’m going with this. The Maze Runner is also quite similar to Divergent and I saw a pattern between all three of them.

Now before you jump down my throat, I’m not saying that their bad books, but they’re not exactly different. And I’m not saying that all dystopian novels are like these three franchises. I’m sure some are very original and frankly, if you think you have some good ones to recommend, I would love to check them out. Leave a comment below (please!). I’m just annoyed with the fact that the three biggest YA franchises that have movies being made are all similar in more ways than one. Like I said before, I’m not hating on all YA novels. I love John Green’s books and I just bought another YA novel the other day called Mosquitoland by David Arnold. I’m excited to read that one because it’s a novel about a road trip (I’m a sucker for road trip novels), but besides that I don’t know much else about the book. Who knows though? I might have just grown up (sad face) and have become uninterested in the whole dystopian setting.

The Windfest show

If you guys don’t know this yet, I am in a band. I play guitar and sing for a band called Just Alice. We just released a Youtube video of our new song called Time Bomb and it would be super cool if you guys checked it out. I’ll also leave a link for our Twitter and Facebook page below so you guys can check out our page and follow us. In a little under two weeks, We will be playing at the annual Windfest. Windfest is a small festival that is held in Portland every year. The last time we played at Windfest, we were all super young and we still had Jarrett as our bass player. This will be our first time performing on a stage in almost 2 years (I believe that is correct but I could be wrong)! It’s been a long road and we are very excited to get the opportunity to play again. We got a sick set list that we think you guys will love! So if you live in Portland, Mark the calendar! We will be playing on Saturday April 16 from 1:30-2:15.

Anyways…..

That’s actually pretty much all I have to tell you. That’s kind of my little blog for the day. It was kind of fun writing that one. Have a great week guys! Stay awesome!
