Terminator Genisys Review

Good Morning! (or good whenever you’re reading this)

I got you guys a review for the weekend! Terminator Genisys is the fifth Terminator movie since The Terminator which showed in 1984. This movie a little confusing at first, especially when it first starts out, but slowly you will understand it as the movie goes on. Terminator: Genisys is a good action blockbuster, and the first good Terminator movie since Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

The Story

The story starts out with the humans fighting the last battle against Skynet. If they win the battle, they win the war, and Skynet will initiate their final weapon and final hope for survival. They will send a Terminator back in time to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor before John Conner is conceived and born. So if you’ve seen the original Terminator, you know that they send a man named Kyle Reese back in time as well, to protect Sarah. In this movie, after the humans win the last battle, they prepare to send Kyle Reese back in time. As he steps up onto the platform to be transported back, something happens. I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say that it messes up the time dimensions and creates an alternate timeline. Now, when Kyle reese goes back to 1984, it is not the same 1984 that was in the original Terminator. It is an alternate timeline, where Sarah Connor is already protected by a terminator. The Terminator was sent back when Sarah was only nine. I know, it seems very confusing, and it only gets more confusing, but it eventually becomes clear towards the end. You just have to bear through that. Anyways now Kyle and Sarah and the Terminator face the task of stopping Skynet before it was ever created. It’s like a combination of the first two Terminator plots, and with a lot more time travel. After understanding the whole time travel thing though, I realized that it was a very cool idea. The alternate timeline ultimately changed the Terminator universe forever. If you take out all the time travel, it is a very basic straight-forward story about the humans trying to stop skynet. For some reason Skynet becomes a computer program called Genisys, which is set to be initiated all the way in 2017. I could never figure out why it was delayed until 2017, which annoyed me. There were a few other questions that I found myself asking as well, which posed as minor annoyances (but annoyances all the same). I wouldn’t call them plot holes, just unanswered questions. Besides that the story was very on point and makes for a solid viewing experience.

The Characters

The biggest name on this list of actors and actresses is Arnold Schwarzenegger (no surprise there). He is making an official return to the series after so long and guess what: He still kills it as a Terminator. He is the Terminator that is sent back to protect Sarah when she is only nine. Jai Courtney plays as Kyle Reese (ew). I have yet to be impressed by this guy. He never makes me care about his characters, and at first I thought it was because of the scripts, but now I’m just convinced he’s a bad actor. He is just very drab and straightforward. He didn’t make me care like the original Kyle Reese in The Terminator. Sarah Connor is played by Emilia Clarke in this movie. Emilia Clarke does a great job of playing Sarah Connor. She’s always been a good actress and she only continues to be with this movie. The one and only John Connor was played by Jason Clarke (another ew). Like Jai Courtney, I’ve never been a big fan of Jason Clarke, however he wasn’t horrible in this movie. He acted well in the shoes of John Connor, so there isn’t a huge loss there. The acting was solid for the most part. The best part of the movie was probably seeing Arnold back in action. It was great to see him fill the shoes of this iconic role again.

The Verdict………………3.5 out of 5

  • confusing but good story
  • solid acting
  • Arnold is back
  • minor annoyances
