Game of Thrones (Book) Review

Winter is Coming

Yes, the saying that you have been hearing for quite some time now. This show has been around for quite awhile now (It’s entering it’s 5th season actually) and the books even longer. I had read the first book Game of Thrones a long time ago, but I recently decided that I could not review books without reviewing this gem. Despite all of the jokes that are made about this series, it truly is worth taking a look into.

A Fantastic and Magical World…..

When you first open Game of Thrones one of the first things you see is a map of the entire land of Westeros, the mythical land that this story takes place in. Once you see the map you immediately see the effort that was put into this book. George Martin has created a world that will be hard to leave once you enter. You are immediately lost in the vastness that is Westeros. THis can also be a problem if you aren’t able to memorize things very well. SOmetimes you might find yourself searching the map for somthing that is mentioned in the book, but not being able to locate it on the map is very frustrating. Basically though if you pay attention you should not have this problem very often.

Story Upon Story……..

The title, Game of Thrones, could not explain the story better. The way that Westeros is run, is by a King and a King’s Hand. The Hand of the King is right below the King and is considered the second most powerful man in the entire realm. The story starts with the Hand of the King passing away suddenly. The good King Robert decides to call upon his old friend, the Lord of Winterfell, Eddard Stark. Eddard Stark is told, anonymously of course, that the Hand before him was murdered. Eddard Stark embarks on a mission to solve the mystery behind the last Hand’s death, and keep King Robert from harm. That is the basic storyline honestly. There is so much more that goes into it and that is what makes it such a great story to read. There is no lack of story, including backstory. Geroge not only put hours upon hours of effort into creating the world, he put more hours of effort into making sure that world was full of rich history for readers to plunge into. George is without a doubt, one of the greatest storytellers of our time, always keeping us on our toes. Trust me when I say this: There will be death……. lots of it.

The Characters

Of course this book is filled with awesome characters! The character development paints every character the way they are meant to be. You will have no problem hating the people you’re supposed to hate (Unless you’re weird) and vice versa for the good guys. You grow to learn and love the characters, everyone playing an important part. There is no wonder why people make jokes about George Martin killing off all of his characters. He really is infamous for it, and he loves doing it too! Just don’t be surprised when that one guy you thought would pull through to the end, dies a horrible early death (COUGH COUGH HINT HINT). If you read this series you will grow to hate George more than any of the villains in this book (If you think I’m joking, just try me).

The Verdict………. 4.9274638329365 out of 5

  • Excellent fantasy world with an excellent story
  • colorful cast of characters that are all relevant
  • sometimes it can be hard to keep up with due to all of the information

Hey what did you guys think? DId you like it? Hate it? Leave a comment below! IF you have suggestions for me leave a comment as well. I have a question for those of you who have read this book, which House would you want to belong to? I think I would want to be born into House Lannister. Leave your reply below!
